The MIT Men's Heavyweight Crew team is looking for both rowers and coxswains to join our team!
Rowing at MIT is a unique experience! Every year, the MIT Heavyweights welcome walk-ons with little or no prior experience to our team. The only requirement is a desire to compete and challenge yourself as a member of the only Division I sport on campus. Walk-ons are usually freshmen, but any MIT student can join!
Throughout the fall season walk-ons learn to row with each other and compete with themselves, the lightweight team, and other novice collegiate programs in the area. At the end of the fall season, the new rowers and coxswains who make the cutoff join the Varsity team for training and competition throughout the winter and spring.
We are looking for both rowers and coxswains.
Men of all sizes are welcome to row for the MIT Heavies, but rowers are typically taller. There is no weight restriction or minimum for heavyweight rowing.
Coxswains do not actively move the boat but are still critical to the performance of a crew. They can be men or women, typically 140 lbs or lighter. Coxswains use the rudder of the racing shell to steer through the course while issuing commands to the rowers. A good coxswain can be the difference between winning and losing a race.
